In the first quarter of 2014 Gear Chain Industrial BV achieved a major milestone in the development of a new CVT for use in trucks and buses. After an extensive period of simulation, design and production, this innovative transmission is now fully assembled and successfully tested in our power test facility.

The project, which started in 2010 and was subsidized by the Ministry of Economic Affairs, was conducted in collaboration with Eindhoven University of Technology. Goal is the realization of a continuously variable transmission for medium duty urban delivery trucks (up to 12 tons GVW) as well as for buses, either in hybrid form or not. The newly developed gearbox is suitable for an input torque up to 750Nm and has a ratio span of 11.6. It offers the advantage of improving vehicle performance with respect to fuel consumption, acceleration and ride comfort. This has been made possible by the use of a dual 44mm GCI chain and a highly efficient servo-hydraulic actuation system.

Installation of the transmission in a DAF LF45 test vehicle is in full swing, so a demonstration on the road can be provided at short notice.
